Essential Items

About 90% of services provided by The Children’s Aid Society of Ottawa are delivered to children who reside at home with their families. Many of these children and their families face complex challenges and barriers such as:

  • mental health or addictions issues;
  • extreme poverty;
  • trauma or human trafficking;
  • no community support; or
  • domestic violence.

With the stress of dealing with these challenges, many families struggle to afford items that create a physically safe environment for their children. A clean place to sleep, an appropriate way to travel, and a comfortable place to grow up are essentials that all children need and deserve.

Sports and Recreation

Many children and youth in child welfare do not have access to the same opportunities as their peers. When it comes to sports and recreational activities, some parents simply cannot afford the expensive team sports, equipment, or lessons that their children want to participate in. For kids, playing sports can help them build friendships, make connections outside of school, and divert any anger or anxiety in a healthy and fun way. You can help a kid explore their passion, grow their confidence, and have an experience that they deserve.

Matthew was in kin-care with his grandmother, who was not on the best of terms with Matthew’s mother. Attending gymnastics and play gym classes as a group has increased Matthew’s social skills and the relationship between grandmother and mother. Their relationship and mutual trust has grown tremendously thanks to their joint attendance to Matthew’s classes; now his mother is able to take him to these classes on her own.  Recently, Matthew has been returned to his mother’s care full time.

Types of Activities We Fund

This mom was so excited to hear that we could buy a stroller for her. She has 3 kids at home and the father refuses to pay anything for the kids. He refused to buy her a stroller for her youngest child because he does not want her to learn English and get out in the community. Her middle child has a rare genetic disorder and requires full time care. Without this stroller, she couldn’t even bring her two other kids across the street safely to go to the store. This family is going to be the biggest success story I’ve ever seen and you’ve helped get them there.
